What Are Ministries?
Ministries are organized groups within the church where members serve together to plan and implement the responsibilities of each ministry in fulfilling the church’s overall purpose/mission.
What is the Purpose of SCC?
Our eternal purpose or Mission is “To Please God.” Christians please God in a variety of ways; one of which is to serve Him. Jesus said, “Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master” (Matt. 25:21b). Ministries provide the means to accomplish this purpose in a united and strategic way.
Ministering Together in the House of God
Not only are Christians identified as the Lord’s body, but we are also called the household of God. Ephesians 2:19 says, “So then you are no longer strangers and alien, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household.” Because we all are a part of the household of God, each member has a part in building up this spiritual house. The church is not functioning according to God’s plan if some members are not actively involved in being a living stone in the stone church that Jesus built (Matt. 16:18).
1 Pet. 2:4-5 says, “And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
People may develop the attitude of wanting “the church” to do more for them, but they are the church. As Christians we are not “consumers” who “shop” for services in God’s house. We are the proprietors who stock the shelves and share what the Lord has given us for the sake of Christ and others. We aren’t “called according to His purpose” to come and be entertained; we are called to be pillars and stones of support in His church.
Let us remember that Jesus is the foundation in His church. “For no one can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Christ Jesus” (1 Cor. 3:11). Building upon that foundation is serious business. Paul said, “But let each man be careful how he builds upon it” (1 Cor. 3:10b).
