DEACONS MINISTRY

IDENTIFYING SCRIPTURE:

Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task. - Acts 6:3

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

The deacon’s ministry exists to minister to the spiritual and physical needs of the members of Severn Christian Church.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

1. The term “deacon” means servant. Therefore, the deacons should be ready and willing servants in the body of Christ taking a proactive role in seeking to serve the needs of the church.

2. Minister to the needs of widows who are members of SCC based upon a Scriptural understanding of widows (I Tim. 5:3-16). This could include transportation to worship services, minor maintenance needs to their homes, and overall care of their lives (communication with staff/elders may be necessary to learn of needs).

3. Look for work projects at the SCC campus that could be undertaken by the deacon’s ministry working in conjunction with the Building and Grounds Ministry Teams.

4. Serve the Lord’s Supper to members in the hospital, nursing homes, and shut-ins.

5. Supervise the lock-up of the church building on Sunday and Wednesday.

6. Supervise and ensure the trash in all containers is emptied twice a week (Sunday afternoon/evening and Wednesday preferably).

7. Function as ushers in the Sunday morning assembly providing a ministry that seats guests and latecomers in an orderly and comfortable manner.

8. Possess a willingness to serve the Lord’s Supper and receive the offering in the church if needed.

CHARACTER QUALITIES

The New Testament lists character qualities of the men who would serve as deacons in Acts 6:3 and I Tim. 3:8-14. These texts should be studied and taken into consideration.
