Our History
The First Christian
Church in Glen Burnie, Maryland began in May, 1957. In the
preamble of her constitution it states, "In order to define an
organizational structure and operating procedures that will promote and
facilitate the work of Christ's Church in an orderly and peaceable manner,
this constitution is adopted for the First Christian Church of Glen Burnie,
MD. As our final authority is Holy Scripture, this instrument cannot
supplant scripture nor serve as a creed, but is intended only to set forth
principles and methods derived from and consistent with scripture."
The word of God was important to the establishment of this congregation and
is just as important today, as the church moves forward to God's glory.
The church building
on Oak Manor Drive
was a small facility consisting of a room for the worship service,
bathroom, baptistry, and a small storage space.
As the attendance grew, so did the building. An addition was built with an
auditorium that seated 205 people, extra classrooms, and a kitchen.
In 1982, the
congregation was 114 in number, average attendance. Gary Serago was hired
to be the new evangelist. Fresh out of Eastern Christian
College, Brother
Gary, set out to win souls for Jesus. The church began to grow, by God's
grace, and hard work. With the growth of the church and limited land, Gary
and others in the church saw the need for the purchase of land. Through
much prayer and searching, God provided 24.24 acres of property on New Cut Road in
Severn, MD, only two and a half miles from the
Oak Manor facility. This would be the "promised" land and a goal
for the congregation to shoot for.
By 1987, the average
attendance was 249. Then, by 1991, further additions were made to the
building; 4 new offices, 6 new classrooms, new bathrooms, and a new foyer.
By this time the average yearly attendance was 342 and the church was
offering three worship services on Sunday mornings. The church was still
looking toward the "promised" land of New Cut Road and many new
souls were being won to Christ.
In 1996, the church
broke the 400 mark with an average attendance of 401, and praise be to God that the church continues to grow. The old
facility at Oak Manor Drive
was eventually sold, and ground was broken in September 1997 and
construction began on the new building at New Cut Road that seats 555. The
first worship service and dedication for the Christian Church of Christ at
New Cut was held on June 21st, 1998, Fathers Day. A fitting day to dedicate
the building to our Heavenly Father.
As the church has
entered the new millennium, we are pressing onward and upward with the
Lord's work. We have adopted a three-word mission statement that we call
out eternal mission. This statement defines and directs all that we do. Our
eternal mission is biblical and simple; it is "To Please God."
It is taken from II Corinthians 5:9 which says,
"So whether we stay on earth or go home, we always want to please
God" (TSEB). January 2006, the name
of the church was changed to Severn
Christian Church.
At Severn Christian
Church, you will find people who are excited about the Lord Jesus Christ
and the salvation from sin that comes only through Him (John 14:12). It has
been said, "people like to go to church where people like to go to
church." At SCC, you will find people who are living victorious
Christian lives and are rejoicing in the goodness of God! Please accept
this invitation as a personal request to come and learn about God and how
to please Him by knowing Him as your Heavenly Father and His son Jesus as
your Lord and Savior! We'll be looking for you.
